THIS 1977-1978 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH POLICE (COMPOL) COVERS TRAINING, SPECIAL SERVICES, AND ORGANIZATION.
Abstract
COMPOL PRESENTLY HAS 1,912 SWORN OFFICERS, BUT AS ITS WORKLOAD AND DUTIES CONTINUE TO GROW, AN URGENT NEED EXISTS FOR NEW DETECTIVES. NEVERTHELESS, TRAINING WAS IMPROVED IN 1977 THROUGH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW CENTER FOR INSERVICE TRAINING AND BY UPGRADING RESOURCES TO MEET TRAINING NEEDS. THUS, THE ROLE OF THE AUSTRALIAN POLICE COLLEGE IS PRESENTLY BEING EVALUATED, AS IT WILL NO LONGER PROVIDE INSERVICE TRAINING. SPECIALIST SERVICES OPERATED BY COMPOL INCLUDE AN INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE BUREAU, DOCUMENTS EXAMINATION, CRIME AND BOMB DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS, AN ANTICOUNTERFEITING SQUAD, A FIREARMS TESTING BUREAU (FOR ALL FIREARMS ENTERING THE COUNTRY), A NATIONAL POLICE RADIO NETWORK, AND COUNTER-TERRORIST WORK. IN 1977-1978, COMPOL CONCENTRATED ON COMBATTING WHITE COLLAR CRIME, INCLUDING SOCIAL SECURITY FRAUD AND COUNTERFEITING, AND INCREASED AIRPORT AND DIPLOMAT SECURITY. COMPOL'S OVERSEAS ACTIVITIES, PROMOTIONS AND APPEALS PROCEDURES, AND EXPENDITURES ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. APPENDICES PRESENT DATA ON PERSONNEL, CRIME CLEARANCE, EXPENDITURES AND POLICE SALARIES, AND VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT. TABLES, CHARTS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS ARE PROVIDED. (PAP)
