The Victoria Police Criminal Identification Squad has developed a full-color Facial Automated Composition and Editing system (FACE).
Abstract
The database contains male and female Caucasian, Aboriginal, Asian, Southern European, and juveniles components, each of which is broken down into submenus. Each component is displayed in a grid to enable to a witness to place it in relation to other facial features. Accessories including glasses and moustaches can be displayed separately and added to the composite. An artistic software package allows the user to make extensive enhancements to the original image, including restyling the hair, changing the nose or eye color and shape, altering the mouth and reshaping the chin, and adding wrinkles, scars, or other blemishes. To maximize the benefits of using FACE, the forensic artist must recognize the degree to which the witness' recall of the suspect is accurate or may have been influenced by other factors. FACE offers the benefits of accurate color, computer aging, facial reconstruction of unidentified deceased persons, and reconstruction of traumatized deceased. 4 references
