Intended for use in a 3-hour training session for "resource families" (foster families, kin caregiver families, and pre-adoptive and adoptive families) who are or will care for children exposed to domestic violence, this guide prepares trainers to deliver a session on the dynamics of domestic violence, the impact of domestic violence on children exposed to it, and strategies for supporting such children.
Abstract
Upon completing the training, it is expected that the resource families will be aware of the dynamics in families that experience domestic violence, know there is a correlation between domestic violence and child maltreatment, and understand the extent and severity of the problems related to children's exposure to domestic violence. The resource families will also be aware that children exposed to domestic violence will react to it in different ways, depending on a variety of factors. The curriculum also anticipates that the training will make the resource families aware of the factors that influence children's resiliency in the face of domestic violence, assist them in recognizing and beginning to meet some of the special needs of these children, and understand the concept of the children's resiliency. The training guide provides detailed instructions to the trainer in how to direct training activities and use teaching tools/materials. The guide contains handouts to be distributed in the course of the training.
