This manual highlights teaching objectives, suggested student activities, and additional resources to instruct high school students on the legal consequences of crime.
Abstract
The primary goal is to teach students to recognize, understand, and obey society's laws. Underpinning the foundation of this guide is the belief that peer pressure can be used effectively to alter high school students' beliefs and judgments. The course is intended to supplement existing social studies units and may be completed in one semester. The central theme of the materials is that it is right to obey society's laws and it is wrong to disobey them. Criminal laws are presented and explained simply, and crime-related examples are provided which involve true-to-life situations. Teaching objectives focus on providing students with survival skills to avoid becoming crime victims, on impressing students with the fact that criminal laws and penalties are related, and on acquainting students with criminal laws most frequently violated by juveniles. The teacher should function as a moderator. Guest speakers, newspapers, field trips, films, and parental participation can provide enrichment opportunities for the students.
