Abstract
The book opens with the portrayal of an inept attempt to counter escalating violence. The final chapter shows how a different style of intervention quieted the aggressive person. An examination of violence in the workplace addresses its extent, its forms, and its causes. After describing the key verbal and nonverbal skills required to communicate effectively in crisis situations with the potential for violence, the book outlines the principles of physical intervention (physical control or evasion of violent and aggressive persons). The book features the S.A.C.R.E.D. approach for managing aggression. This involves Self-control, Analysis of the situation and the environment, Choice of strategies, Responding appropriately, Evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions, and Decision on the next step. Following a review of the personal and social costs to workers victimized by aggression and violence, guidelines cover the provision of prevention and post-trauma services and employee assistance programs. 5 figures, 37 illustrative photos, 74-item bibliography, subject index.
