This workbook presents real-world scenarios to police recruits and police officers to aid in conceptualizing and retaining the basic concepts of criminal investigation.

Abstract

It has been found, through academy instruction that students who study investigations benefit from a scenario-based approach. The workbook incorporates real-world scenarios allowing the students to relate to the subject matter with positive results. It takes a proactive approach to the learning experience. Students are placed directly into a scenario that challenges the student to respond as if they are actually on the scene. The scenarios focus on 11 topics which include: (1) crime scene searches; (2) crime scene photography; (3) diagramming; (4) fingerprinting; (5) evidence and chain of custody; (6) crimes against property and people; (7) surveillance techniques; (8) informants; (9) drug and vice; (10) bombs and explosives; and (11) organized crime and terrorists. Each topic area is followed by a summary and a quiz and crossword puzzle to reinforce what was learned.
