Abstract
THE HISTORICAL AND THEORETICAL ASPECTS DEALT WITH IN THE FIRST SECTION INCLUDE AN EXAMINATION OF 18TH CENTURY MILANESE CESARE BECCARIA'S SUBSTITUTE FOR THE DEATH PENALTY -- PENAL SLAVERY, A REVIEW OF EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENTS IN CRIMINOLOGY BETWEEN 1950 AND 1974, A DISCUSSION OF THE PROBLEM OF FREE WILL AS OPPOSED TO DETERMINISM IN THE CONTEXT OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, AND AN ANALYSIS OF THE PUBLIC'S PERCEPTION OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF CRIME AND CONCOMITANT CHANGES IN THE ACCEPTABILITY OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR. AMONG THE CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN CRIMINOLOGY DISCUSSED IN THE SECOND PART OF THE COLLECTION ARE ECONOMIC, OR WHITE-COLLAR CRIME AND RESEARCH EFFORTS ON THE TOPIC; THE PROBLEM OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM AND POLITICAL CRIME, AS WELL AS CRIME PREVENTION AGREEMENTS BETWEEN CONCERNED NATIONS; THE ROLE OF THE FEMALE IN CONTEMPORARY CRIME, SEEN THROUGH A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SITUATION IN ISRAEL AND THE UNITED STATES; AND TRENDS IN THE SCIENCE OF VICTIMOLOGY. THE CLINICAL APPROACH TO CRIMINOLOGY IS REPRESENTED IN SELECTIONS ON MAJOR PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPLANATIONS OF DELINQUENCY, RESEARCH INTO THE TEMPORAL EXPERIENCE OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS, GROUP THERAPY TREATMENT OF THE DANGEROUS OFFENDER AT MARYLAND'S PATUXENT INSTITUTION, AND REEDUCATION AND REHABILITATION OF JUVENILES AT BOSCOVILLE IN CANADA. ASPECTS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM COVERED IN THE FINAL SECTION INCLUDE NEW THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES OF POLICE ORGANIZATION, LEGISLATION FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS AS PROMULGATED IN ISRAEL, TRAINING FOR JUDGES IN SENTENCING AND SENTENCE STRUCTURE IN GENERAL, AND THE CONCEPT OF CLEMENCY AS SUBJECT TO A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS AND CONTEMPORARY CRITIQUE. MANY OF THE PAPERS PROVIDE NOTES AND REFERENCES. (DAS)
