Abstract
THE PRESENTATION'S GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING OF MAIN ELEMENTS OF CONSUMER LAW AND THE GOVERNMENT'S ROLE IN CONSUMER PROTECTION. FOLLOWING A GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE CONSUMER PROTECTION MOVEMENT, THE PRESENTATION REVIEWS SERVICES PROVIDED BY FLORIDA CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCIES. THE CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION DEALS WITH INDIVIDUAL COMPLAINTS, WHILE THE CONSUMER ADVOCATE'S OFFICE DEALS WITH CONSUMER PROBLEMS THAT AFFECT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION. CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION ACTIVITIES INCLUDE INSPECTIONS OF CONSUMER PRODUCTS AND MEASURING DEVICES, COUNSELING AND ASSISTANCE OF INDIVIDUAL CONSUMERS WITH COMPLAINTS, AND ADVICE ON FILING OF SMALL CLAIMS SUITS. THE DIVISION HANDLES OVER 40,000 COMPLAINTS PER YEAR. THE CONSUMER ADVOCATE REPRESENTS THE PUBLIC INTEREST BY APPEARING AT REGULATORY HEARINGS, ENCOURAGING PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION FAVORABLE TO CONSUMERS, FILING CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS, WORKING WITH BUSINESS AND OTHER GROUPS TO IMPROVE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CONSUMERS AND BUSINESSES, AND PROVIDING PUBLIC INFORMATION. THE FILMSTRIP IS PART OF THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNINGS (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD. THE PROGRAM GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS.
