THIS TEACHER SOURCEBOOK, PART OF A LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR THE DADE COUNTY, FLA., JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS, PROVIDES BACKGROUND LEGAL INFORMATION, TEACHING STRATEGIES, AND RESOURCES FOR PROGRAM TEACHERS.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM INCLUDES ELECTIVE COURSES ON THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS. THE PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED BY THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNING (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD AND SUPPORTED BY AN ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT (TITLE IV) GRANT. THE TEACHER SOURCEBOOK PRESENTS SIX LESSON PLANS, ALL BASED ON ONE RECENT SUPREME COURT DECISION, TO ILLUSTRATE DIFFERENT TEACHING STRATEGIES (CASE STUDY, SOCIAL SCIENCE DATA GATHERING, SOCIODRAMA, SIMULATED JURY TRIAL, COMMUNITY RESEARCH, AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT). NEXT, PROCEDURES FOR DOING LEGAL RESEARCH ARE SUGGESTED. INCLUDED ARE METHODS FOR FINDING OUT ABOUT THE LAW (USING ENCYCLOPEDIAS, LEGAL CITATIONS, COURT REPORTS, THE AMERICAN DIGEST SYSTEM, AND ANNOTATED LAW REPORTS) AND WAYS TO READ A CASE. FINALLY, LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR EACH PART OF THE CURRICULUM ARE PRESENTED IN DETAIL; THEY ARE LISTED TOGETHER WITH RELATED SOURCES AND CASE ILLUSTRATIONS. EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND READINGS FOR TEACHERS COVER FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, CRIMINAL LAW, DUE PROCESS, EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAW, AND CONSUMER LAW. A COMBINED LOG SHEET AND TEACHER REACTION FORM IS INCLUDED. FOR THE OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE LEGAL PROGRAM FOR JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS, SEE NCJ 62128--62133 AND 62135-62139. (CFW)
