This report presents a system for evaluating fire safety in detention and correctional facilities and explains alternative combinations of widely accepted fire protection systems and building design features that provide a level of fire safety equivalent to that required by the 1985 Life Safety Code for detention and correctional facilities.
Abstract
Specific guidelines are presented for each of four use conditions: (1) zoned egress, (2) zoned impeded egress, (3) impeded egress, and (4) contained. Each set of guidelines provides two levels of evaluation, one for buildings with no sprinkler system or a partial sprinkler system and the other for totally sprinklered buildings. Individual sections explain the identification of fire safety parameters, the quantification of fire safety parameters, the creation of a redundant safety subsystem, calibration, professional judgment review and critique, the use of a computer program, and system testing.
