THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT, DESPITE MODERN PRISON REFORMS, IMPRISONMENT HAS BUT LITTLE SUCCESS IN EITHER FULLY REHABILITATING OFFENDERS OR DETERRING RECIDIVISM AND IS THEREFORE A SECOND-RATE, DEFENSIVE MEASURE BY SOCIETY.
Abstract
THE BELIEF THAT IMPRISONMENT IS AN EFFECTIVE MEANS OF REHABILITATION IS REBUTTED ON THE BASES THAT PRISON IS A CONTAMINATED ENVIRONMENT WHICH CONTAMINATES FURTHER AND THAT PRISON TREATMENT FAILS TO TREAT THE MOST CRITICAL CRIME CAUSES, NAMELY THOSE WHICH OPERATE FREELY OUTSIDE OF PRISONS AND WHICH MAY HAVE INSTIGATED A CRIMINAL'S FIRST OFFENSE.
