PRESENTATION OF A THEORY THAT UNEMPLOYMENT MAY ACT AS AN EXTERNAL FORCE TO PRODUCE PRESSURE TOWARD DEVIANT BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
THE WRITER STUDIES THE JUVENILE LABOR MARKET IN AN EFFORT TO DISCOVER THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE UNEMPLOYED, DISTRIBUTION OF UNEMPLOYED YOUTH IN THE CITY, AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB MARKET THEY FACE. SOME OF THE VITAL ASPECTS OF THE MECHANISMS THAT FUNCTION IN THE LABOR MARKET IN MIDDLE AND UPPER SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASSES APPEAR TO BE LACKING IN THE LOWER SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASS, THE RESULT OF WHICH IS NOT ONLY ECONOMIC INEFFICIENCY BUT A SOURCE OF PRESSURE TOWARD DEVIANT BEHAVIOR. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THE NEED FOR LONG-RUN FORECASTING OF THE FUTURE DEMAND AND SUPPLY CONDITIONS FOR VARIOUS OCCUPATIONS, AS WELL AS INFORMATION REGARDING ALTERNATIVE JOBS AVAILABLE WHEN THE INDIVIDUAL IS READY TO ENTER THE WORK FORCE.
