Three samples of male methadone maintenance corrections admissions underwent a 7-year follow-up interview. They included a random sample of 100, a sample of 136 who had at least 30 months remaining on civil addict parole (CAP) status at the time of entry into a methadone maintenance program, and a matched sample of 136 not on parole.
Abstract
The findings revealed that the overall sample spent nearly 60 percent of the nonincarcerated time period on methadone which resulted in a reduction in daily heroin use and associated criminal behavior. While the addition of supervised parole did not significantly improve behavior over that attributable to methadone maintenance, it did reduce the length of intervals of daily heroin use both before and after methadone entry. 6 tables, 2 figures, and 12 references
