Abstract
BOTH THE STUDENT AND PRACTITIONER ARE INTRODUCED TO THE MANAGERIAL FUNCTIONS OF PLANNING, ORGANIZING, FISCAL MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET; TO MAJOR ELEMENTS OF ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT; AND TO THE IMPLICATIONS OF CHANGE IN POLICE ORGANIZATIONS. THIS ANTHOLOGY IS DIVIDED INTO A NUMBER OF CHAPTERS COVERING THE HISTORY OF POLICE MANAGEMENT THOUGHT, INCLUDING INDIVIDUAL LEADERS IN THIS FIELD AND THEIR OUTSTANDING INNOVATIONS AND PHILOSOPHIES; THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES IN APPLICATION TO POLICE MANAGEMENT AND MANAGEMENT IN GENERAL, INCORPORATING A DISCUSSION OF THEORY 'X' AND THEORY 'Y'--THE HARD AND SOFT APPROACHES TO MANAGEMENT--AND THE MANAGERIAL GRID WHICH ORGANIZES SEVERAL THEORIES OF MANAGEMENT IN TERMS OF HOW EACH DEALS WITH ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS FOR PRODUCTION AND PROFIT AND HUMAN NEEDS FOR MATURE AND HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS.
