This article introduces the initial issue of the new Journal of Emotional Abuse and explains the framework for this emerging field, with emphasis on the theoretical foundations, definitions, and areas in need of further research.
          Abstract
The discussion notes that psychological maltreatment, nonphysical aggression, and trauma are beginning to be recognized as interrelated phenomena that are perhaps at the root of many of the psychological problems experienced by people, especially those who have been victimized in some manner. Research is needed to improve understanding of emotional abuse, to help develop intervention techniques, and to promote prevention programs. This interdisciplinary journal's goal is to provide a forum for interaction among practitioners, policy-makers, and researchers in mental health, social services, law, child development, social and industrial systems, education, child protection, religion, medicine, nursing, and business. The co-editors encourage the submission of articles concerning all aspects of emotional abuse for possible publication. 4 references (Author abstract modified)
