Abstract
A PRISON WELFARE OFFICER SERVES AS A SOCIAL CASEWORKER, A CHANNEL OF COMMUNICATION ON SOCIAL PROBLEMS, PLANNER OF AFTER-CARE, AND FOCAL POINT OF SOCIAL WORK WITHIN THE INSTITUTION. IN ADDITION TO INTERVIEW AND COUNSELING INMATES, HE IS FREQUENTLY INVOLVED WITH VISITORS, SOCIAL WORKERS, UNIVERSITY SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENTS, COURSES AND PROJECTS, AND THE WIVES AND FAMILIES OF INMATES. THE AUTHOR ASSERTS THAT, WHILE MAY INMATES REMAIN UNAFFECTED BY COUNSELING, THERE ARE THOSE WITH WHOM RESOCIALIZATION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVED.
