This paper examines critically the concept of social diagnosis as it operated in the English probation system from the 1930's to the 1960's.
          Abstract
It has a particular focus on probation officers' social enquiry reports for the criminal courts as best exemplifying the diagnostic ideal in action, and illustrative examples of such reports are produced for each of the four decades. (Author abstract)
