A REVIEW OF THE STATE-OF-THE-ART OF INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF UNMODIFIED EXPLOSIVES AS WELL AS TECHNIQUES APPLICABLE TO EXPLOSIVES TO WHICH MATERIALS HAVE BEEN ADDED DURING MANUFACTURE FOR IDENTIFICATION.
Abstract
A GENERAL EXPLANATION OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS AND METHODS INVOLVED IN EXPLOSIVES DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION IS GIVEN. IN ADDITION, A TECHNICAL SUMMARY OF THE TECHNIQUES IS PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM FOR THE READER'S CONVENIENCE. WHILE THE COMPLETENESS OF THIS REVIEW CANNOT BE ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED, EVERY EFFORT WAS MADE TO ASSEMBLE INFORMATION ON ALL PROPOSED METHODS OF EXPLOSIVES DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION. THE INFORMATION PRESENTED WAS GATHERED MAINLY THROUGH DISCUSSIONS WITH THOSE INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TECHNIQUES DESCRIBED. FREQUENTLY THIS INFORMATION HAS NOT BEEN PRESENTED IN THE OPEN LITERATURE OR BEEN PREVIOUSLY COMPILED IN CONVENIENT FORM. TECHNIQUES THAT HAVE BEEN EVAULATED AND FOUND NOT TO BE PRACTICAL ARE ALSO INCLUDED FOR COMPLETENESS. SEVERAL OF THE CONCEPTS REVIEWED SHOW PROMISE FOR NEAR-TERM REALIZATION OF AN IMPROVED POTENTIAL FOR DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF EXPLOSIVES, ESPECIALLY WHEN TAGS ARE ADDED TO THE EXPLOSIVES.
