This DVD package provides instruction in the new skills, competencies, and mindset required for making the transition from being a line-staff corrections employee under the supervision of an upper level manager to becoming a manger who supervises a group of front-line employees.
Abstract
The training consists of eight modules that focus on the core competencies corrections supervisors need to perform their work effectively. These competencies include the development of personal and professional goals, providing leadership in advancing the goals of the organization, problem solving, critical thinking, decisionmaking, managing conflict, coaching, counseling, administering discipline, and encouraging staff to perform at a high level. The DVD package consists of two DVDs, one that presents self-directed training for individuals and a second DVD that targets a group of trainees who move through the training as a group. The instructional method for both DVDs consists of videos within the DVDs that provide audio and visual presentations of material and exercises appropriate for each of the eight modules. In one DVD the guidance and instruction presumes group participation; and in the second DVD, individual participation is assumed. The group instruction lasts approximately 36 hours, and the length of individual instruction in the eight modules can be tailored to the schedule and preference of the individual. The group DVD contains participant and facilitator guides, a reflective tracking journal, and a core competency profile. The video instruction is provided by experienced corrections managers.
