Aggregate figures supplied by probation areas were used to determine the ethnic origins of probation officers employed in England and Wales in 1992, pursuant to a new race and ethnic monitoring system.
Abstract
Eighty percent of probation staff were white and 5 percent belonged to a minority ethnic group; ethnic origin was not recorded for 15 percent of the staff. The proportion of probation officers who were white was 82 percent white and 5 percent were of an ethnic minority. The proportion of probation staff belonging to ethnic minorities was similar to the proportion in the general population between age 16 and retirement age. The proportion of probation staff of Black Caribbean origin was twice as large as the proportion in the general population, while the proportion of probation staff belonging to Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Chinese groups was half that for the general population. A larger proportion of female than male probation staff belonged to an ethnic minority. 2 notes and 6 tables
