FIRST-YEAR REPORT OF A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY BY BUILDING BETTER POLICE YOUTH RELATIONSHIPS.
Abstract
THE REPORT CONTAINS MOSTLY BASELINE DATA RELEVANT TO THE PROGRAM'S STATED OBJECTIVES - TO REEXAMINE VALUES AND ATTITUDES ABOUT THE FIELDS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE, TO ACQUAINT THE POLICE, THE COMMUNITY AND THE SCHOOLS WITH EACH OTHER'S PROBLEMS, AND TO STIMULATE ACTION AIMED AT SOLVING THOSE PROBLEMS. THREE QUESTIONNAIRES WERE ADMINISTERED TO GATHER DATA WHICH WOULD ILLUMINATE SUCH CRITICAL AREAS AS THE IMAGE THAT SCHOOL CHILDREN HAVE TOWARD POLICE, THE VALUES THAT OFFICERS HOLD TOWARD MATTERS CONCERNING YOUTH, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIAISON OFFICERS AND THE PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS OF THE SCHOOLS VISITED. RESULTS OF THESE QUESTIONNAIRES SHOWED STUDENTS TO HOLD GENERALLY POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD THE POLICE. THE QUESTIONNAIRES SHOWED THE POLICE TO HOLD RELATIVELY CONSERVATIVE VIEWS OF YOUTH MATTERS YET TO BE OPEN-MINDED AND MORE MODERATE WHEN EXPOSED TO THE SOCIAL CONCERNS OF EDUCATION. ALSO, OFFICERS AND SCHOOL STAFF WERE FOUND TO BE IN AGREEMENT OVER MANY OF THE PROGRAM'S GOALS. THE QUESTIONNAIRES ARE INCLUDED AS ATTACHMENTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
