CRITICAL OBSERVATIONS ABOUT RECIDIVISM RESEARCH AND THE RESULTS OF A STUDY OF 451 JUVENILES IN THE NETHERLANDS WHO WERE SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT BETWEEN 1962 AND 1964.
Abstract
DISCUSSED ARE THE LACK OF THEORETICAL INTEGRATION IN RECIDIVISM STUDIES, THE NEED FOR MORE LONGITUDINAL STUDIES, AND THE UNRELIABILITY OF PREDICTIVE FACTORS AND STATISTICAL METHODS. THE STUDY OF 451 JUVENILES USED A MULTIPLE CORRELATION OF THE OFFENDERS' PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL, AND CRIMINAL RECORDS TO SHOW THAT THESE FACTORS DIFFER SIGNIFICANTLY BETWEEN RECIDIVISTS AND NON-RECIDIVISTS. A FURTHER ANALYSIS SHOWED THAT THE POSITIVE EFFECT OF A FAMILY MOVE ON A JUVENILE OFFENDER'S CRIMINAL CAREER IS LIMITED BY THE PRESENCE OF OTHER NEGATIVE SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS.
