After instructing youth in the dangers of drug use and the peer influences that may encourage youth to begin drug use, this book offers youth 50 suggestions designed to help prevent drug abuse.
Abstract
Some suggestions for youth in fighting drug abuse among their peers are to ask the school student council to set anti-drug goals for the year, suggest that English teachers assign students a written paper or oral report on "Why I'm Going To Live a Drug-Free Life," and work with the Parent-Teachers Association to help parents appreciate the need to talk with their kids about drugs. Other suggestions are to ask a local "rap" group to write a song about the dangers of drugs, to organize a week-long series of activities to show how youth can "get high" on constructive activities and experiences rather than on drugs, and to ask fast-food restaurants for support in a drug prevention program. Among the remaining suggestions are alcohol breath testing on students suspected of drinking at school functions; classes on how to resist pressures to use tobacco, drugs, and alcohol; a "hot line" for anonymous reporting of drug use and dealing; a field trip to a local jail to hear selected inmates talk about their experiences; and a telethon to educate the public about drugs and raise money for drug prevention efforts.
