THE FORMAT OF A WORKSHOP ON FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS OF SUSPICIOUS DEATHS, HELD DURING AN INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE CONFERENCE, IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP WAS TO PROVIDE PARTICIPANTS WITH A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF FORENSIC SCIENTISTS IN ANSWERING QUESTIONS SURROUNDING SUSPICIOUS DEATHS AND IN AIDING THE PROSECUTION OF HOMICIDE CASES. DURING THE WORKSHOP, A MOCK PRETRIAL CONFERENCE WAS PRESENTED, IN WHICH A PROSECUTOR INVESTIGATING A HYPOTHETICAL CASE OF SUSPECTED HOMICIDE HEARD SEVERAL FORENSIC SCIENTISTS EXPLAIN THEIR ROLES AND OUTLINE THEIR TESTIMONY PERTAINING TO THE CASE. INCLUDED IN THE CONFERENCE WERE A CRIME SCENE TECHNICIAN, A CRIMINALIST, AND A FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST, ODONTOLOGIST, TOXICOLOGIST, DOCUMENT EXAMINER, ANTHROPOLOGIST, AND PSYCHIATRIST. THE DOCUMENTATION OF THE WORKSHOP CONSISTS OF A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FORMAT, A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS, AND DEFINITIONS OF THE FORENSIC SCIENCE DISCIPLINES REPRESENTED IN THE MOCK PRETRIAL CONFERENCE.
