This chapter looks at the future of personality assessment research in police psychology.

Abstract

The chapter provides an overview of the research issues and possible uses of personality assessment in law enforcement. Areas in law enforcement that would benefit from the use of personality assessments are described in detail and include: pre-employment screening, creating direct measures of potential performance and measurement systems, the need for more criterion validity studies, and using the assessments for selection of candidates for special units. Other issues examined in this chapter include the use of effect sizes and research syntheses, a discussion on advancing the evidence via experimental and quasi-experimental designs, the use of research in treatment planning for police officers, and the potential for exploring the role of research on the effectiveness of fitness-for-duty evaluations.
