This videotape aims to help correctional personnel understand and identify inmate gangs and gang members and use the most effective techniques for managing inmate gangs and their members.
Abstract
The discussion emphasizes that the first step in effective control of inmate gangs is to accept the reality that gangs and gang members are present in the correctional institution. Some gangs in correctional facilities are connected to established street gangs. Other gangs are known as prison gangs. Warning signs of gang activity include an increase in contraband; an increase in violence and disciplinary violations; an increase in the number of inmate transfer requests; and the use of hand signs, gang apparel, or gang tattoos. The most effective gang management tool is good information. Every facility should maintain careful records and enforce rules against unauthorized group activity and possession of gang-related materials. Gang members should be segregated from each other and from members of rival gangs whenever possible. Discussion questions and attached printed study guide with summary and review quiz
