AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNTS BY A YOUNG GERMAN OFFENDER ARE INTERPRETED TO DEMONSTRATE THE APPLICATION OF A SOCIOLOGICAL CRIME CAUSE THEORY TO AN INDIVIDUAL CASE.
Abstract
THE THEORY ASSERTS THAT CRIME OFTEN REPRESENTS AN ATTEMPT BY PERSONS IN SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED CONDITIONS TO IMPROVE THOSE CONDITIONS. SPECIFIC CRIMINAL ACTS IN THIS CASE ARE FURTHER ANALYZED AS RESULTING FROM THE INTERACTION OF THREE FACTORS - STRATEGIES OF ACTION TO OBTAIN PROPERTY OR POWER, DEFINITIONS OF SITUATIONS BY THE OFFENDERS, AND REINFORCEMENT OF INTENTIONS BY GROUP SOLIDARITY. THE TESTIMONY IN THIS CASE WAS TAPE-RECORDED BY A SOCIOLOGICAL FIELD WORKER IN THE OFFENDER'S OWN NEIGHBORHOOD. --IN GERMAN
