REPORTS ON PREVIOUS AND CURRENT INTERNATIONAL FORENSIC SCIENCE RESEARCH ARE REPORTED AT THIS SYMPOSIUM, ALONG WITH DISCUSSIONS OF SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT AND PROCESSES.
Abstract
REPORTS WERE PRESENTED ON IMMUNO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE HUMAN ORIGIN OF BLOOD AND STUDY METHODS FOR MEASURING THE AGE OF DRIED BLOOD STAINS. REPRESENTATIVES FROM BRAZIL AND INDIA PRESENTED FINDINGS ON SUPERIMPOSED HANDWRITING STROKES AND THE AGE OF INKS, RESPECTIVELY. LASER SPECTROGRAPHY WAS REPORTED ON BY THE AUSTRIAN REPRESENTATIVE, WHO EMPHASIZED THE ADVANTAGES OFFERED BY LASER SPECTRAL MICROANALYSIS. IN PARTICULAR, THIS METHOD MADE POSSIBLE THE EXAMINATION OF EXTREMELY SMALL JEWEL SAMPLES WHICH COULD NOT BE EXAMINED THROUGH DESTRUCTIVE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES. ADDITIONAL REPORTS FOCUSED ON POLLEN ANALYSIS AS A MEANS OF ESTIMATING THE AGE OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE AND DETERMINING THE LENGTH OF TIME OBJECTS HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THE AIR, ATOMIC ABSORPTION ANALYSIS, NEUTRON ACTIVATION, AND PROBLEMS CONCERNING GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY. TOPICS OF CURRENT EXPERIMENTS INCLUDED LEGAL AND CRIMINALISTIC PROBLEMS WHEN ANALYZING DRUGS, THE USE OF RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES FOR MARKETING RED CORPUSCLES WHEN CLASSIFYING BLOOD STAINS, AND THE POSITIONING OF SKULLS FOR PHOTOGRAPHY DURING SUPERIMPOSITION STUDIES. SUCH EQUIPMENT AND PROCESSES AS THE VIDEO FILE FINGERPRINT SYSTEM AND GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY AND PYROLYSIS OF NITROCELLULOSE PARTICLES WERE ALSO CONSIDERED. ISSUES FOR CONSIDERATION AT FUTURE SYMPOSIUMS WERE DEVELOPED, INCLUDING THE IDENTIFICATION OF VOICE PRINTS, ANALYSIS AND DETECTION OF EXPLOSIVES, AND THE APPLICATION OF THE COMPUTER TO THE PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN IDENTIFYING HANDWRITING SAMPLES. A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS IS PROVIDED. (LWM)
