THE FOCUS OF THIS TEXT IS ON CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND BASIC PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AS OPPOSED TO COMPUTATIONAL DETAILS AND COMPLEX METHODS FOR IMPLEMENTING AND CONDUCTING INVESTIGATIONS. SUMMARIES OF RESEARCH STUDIES WHICH HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN THE LITERATURE ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE VARIOUS DESIGN STRATEGIES.
