This article describes the various activities of the American Correctional Association (ACA) that are designed to achieve the professional development of corrections staff.
Abstract
ACA's Professional Development Department consists of four sections: Grants, Contracts, and Cooperative Agreements; Conference Programming; Training and Technical Assistance; and Educational and Training Products. The description of the work of the Grants, Contracts, and Cooperative Agreements section focuses on technology, juvenile justice, and violent offenders. Regarding conference programs, the ACA conducts two major meetings annually. The Congress of Correction is held in August, and the Winter Conference is held in January. These conferences offer a variety of workshops designed to meet corrections staff development needs. In the area of technical assistance, the ACA offers both national and international workshops and technical assistance. The workshops help administrators not only solve problems but also develop staff. Technical assistance is provided to agencies to help them achieve more effective but less expensive operations. In the area of education and training, ACA offers a full range of education and training products or programs to supplement an agency's or facility's preservice and in-service training programs.
