THIS GUIDE FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IS INTENDED AS A SUPPLEMENT TO EXISTING CIVICS CURRICULUM MATERIALS FOR THE STUDY OF THE ROLE OF LAW IN AMERICAN SOCIETY.
Abstract
VARIOUS METHODOLOGIES AND APPROACHES TO TEACHING A LAW-RELATED COURSE ARE REVIEWED, INCLUDING THE CASE STUDY, ADVERSARY, SIMULATION, PANEL DISCUSSION, RESOURCE PERSON, MOCK TRIAL, ROLE PLAYING, SOCRATIC DIALOGUE, DEBATE, BRAINSTORMING, JURISPRUDENTIAL, AND MORAL DEVELOPMENT APPROACHES. ACTUAL LESSON PLANS ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS: PRIMARY LESSONS; PLANS DEVELOPED FOR THE INTERMEDIATE GRADES (3-5); AND PLANS DEVELOPED BY SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS, TRAINED BY THE MARYLAND STATE BAR ASSOCIATION'S LAW-RELATED EDUCATION PROGRAM, TO BE UTILIZED IN GRADES THREE THROUGH FIVE. THE FORMAT OF EACH OF THE LESSON PLANS CONSISTS OF TOPIC, TIME TO COMPLETE THE LESSON, MATERIALS, RATIONALE, CONTENT, OBJECTIVES, PROCEDURES, EVALUATION, AND SUGGESTED ASSIGNMENTS. A FORM TO BE USED IN EVALUATING THE MATERIALS IS FURNISHED.
