Abstract
The debate is typified today by growing public support for the extreme punishment of offenders, as symbolized by the return of inmate chain gangs. The articles in this special issue discuss various topics including the changing methodology of prison research, the development of a multidisciplinary managerial approach to corrections, the use of deadly force by police departments, and the debatable effectiveness of shock incarceration programs in terms of their impact on recidivism rates.
