A DISCUSSION OF THE FAVORABLE RESULTS OF REQUIRING A COLLEGE DEGREE FOR ENTRANCE LEVEL APPLICANTS FOR DEPUTY SHERIFF.
Abstract
WHEN THE COLLEGE REQUIREMENT WAS INSTITUTED, THERE WERE 15 COLLEGE GRADUATES ON THE STAFF OF 210 OFFICERS. AT THE TIME THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN, 114 OF 213 COMMISSIONED PERSONNEL HELD A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE OR HIGHER. AFTER MUCH INITIAL CRITICISM, THE NEW REQUIREMENT HAS GAINED ACCEPTANCE. THE NEW IMAGE OF PROFESSIONALIZATION, AN ATTRACTIVE SALARY, CAREER MOBILITY, AND AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF COLLEGE GRADUATES HAVE NURTURED THE SUCCESS OF THE NEW STANDARD.
