PRESENT-DAY PROBATION, PAROLE AND AFTER-CARE SERVICES IN JAPAN ARE PECULIARLY CHARACTERIZED BY THE EXTENSIVE PARTICIPATION OF VOLUNTEER PROBATION OFFICERS.
Abstract
THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR A VOLUNTEER PROBATION OFFICER ARE CONFIDENCE, POPULARITY IN THE COMMUNITY, ENTHUSIASM AND TIME, FINANCIAL STABILITY, AND GOOD HEALTH. AS A RESULT, MOST VOLUNTEERS COME FROM THE MIDDLE TO UPPER SOCIAL STRATA WITH A MEDIAN AGE OF 59. VOLUNTEERS HAVE A ONE DAY TRAINING SESSION WHICH INCLUDES SUCH THINGS AS THE PHILOSOPHY OF CORRECTIONS. THE NON-OFFICIAL AND LOCAL NATURE OF THE VOLUNTEER AID IN HIS EFFECTIVENESS.
