A REVIEW WHICH INCLUDES INFORMATION AND SUGGESTIONS REGARDING PROGRAMS OF DIRECT TREATMENT OR SERVICE TO THE JUVENILE OFFENDER THAT MAY BE OF USE TO PLANNERS SEEKING EFFECTIVE WAYS TO REDUCE DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON EIGHT SYSTEMATICALLY PLANNED AND EVALUATED JUVENILE-OFFENDER TREATMENT PROGRAMS CONDUCTED WITHIN THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE SUCCESS OF TREATMENT IN REDUCING DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR AND THE RELIABILITY OF THE EVALUATION METHODOLOGY EMPLOYED. THE PROGRAMS DISCUSSED INCLUDE THE SILVERLAKE EXPERIMENT OF CALIFORNIA, THE CALIFORNIA YOUTH CENTER RESEARCH PROJECT, ACHIEVEMENT PLACE IN LAWRENCE, KANSAS, THE COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROJECT OF CALIFORNIA, THE LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY DELINQUENCY CONTROL PROJECT, THE CAMBRIDGE STREETCORNER RESEARCH PROJECT, THE SEATTLE ATLANTIC STREET CENTER, AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH CORPS PROGRAM IN CINCINNATI. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO ASSESS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EIGHT PROGRAM STUDIES. THE GENERAL DESIRABILITY OF JUVENILE-OFFENDER TREATMENT PROGRAMS IS EXPLORED IN LIGHT OF RECENT THINKING AND RESEARCH ON DELINQUENCY PREVENTION AND TREATMENT. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE WITH REGARD TO THE PLANNING AND OPERATION OF JUVENILE-OFFENDER PROGRAMS.
