A SOCIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF PAROLE AS A SUBSYSTEM OF THE LARGER SOCIAL SUBSYSTEM OF JUVENILE CORRECTIONS, ANALYZED ON THE BASIS OF ASPECTS OF BEHAVIOR WHICH ARE COMPARED ACROSS CATEGORIES OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN PAROLE.
Abstract
THE POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE PAROLE SYSTEM - THE PAROLEE, PAROLEES' PEERS, PAROLE OFFICERS, PAROLE OFFICERS' PEERS, AND PAROLEES' PARENTS AND OTHERS - ARE FIRST INVESTIGATED. THE CULTURE OF THE PAROLE SUBSYSTEM AND THE EXPECTED ROLES OF EACH OF THE FIVE GROUPS MENTIONED ABOVE ARE ALSO EXPLORED. THE JUVENILE PAROLE STRUCTURE IS THEN INVESTIGATED IN TERMS OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF PAROLEES TO THEIR PEERS, THE RELATIONSHIP OF PAROLE OFFICERS TO THEIR PEERS, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PAROLEES AND THEIR PAROLE OFFICERS. FINALLY, THE ACTUAL, AS OPPOSED TO EXPECTED, ROLE PERFORMANCE OF THOSE INVOLVED WITH THE JUVENILE PAROLE SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF JUVENILE PAROLE ARE OFFERED.
