BRIEF ACCOUNT OF CURRENT LAWS AND PROPOSED CHANGES IN DRUG LAWS IN BRITAIN AND DESCRIPTION OF CHANGES IN PATTERNS OF DRUG MISUSE FROM THE 1950'S TO 1971.
Abstract
CHANGES IN DRUG PATTERNS LED TO THE RECALLING OF AN INTERDEPARTMENTAL COMMITTEE WHICH RECOMMENDED SETTING UP SPECIAL CLINICS TO CONTINUE TO PRESCRIBE OPIATES FOR ADDICTS AS ADDICTION CONTINUED TO BE SEEN PRIMARILY AS A MEDICAL RESPONSIBILITY. A STANDING ADVISORY COMMITTEE WHICH PRODUCED FOUR REPORTS WAS SET UP AND SOME OF THEIR FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. SOME OF THE PROBLEMS WHICH ARISE IN PRACTICE IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THESE LAWS ARE MENTIONED AND A FULLER TREATMENT OF CURRENT BRITISH LEGISLATION IS GIVEN IN THE APPENDIX.
