OPERATING PRINCIPLES AND LIMITATIONS OF KEY AND COMBINATION LOCKS.
Abstract
TODAYS SPIRALING CRIME RATE HAS MADE MOST CITIZENS SECURITY CONSCIOUS. WITH THE INCREASING UTILIZATION OF LOCKS, POLICEMEN AND THE PUBLIC SHOULD HAVE A GOOD BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LOCKS AND THEIR LIMITATIONS. THIS PAMPHLET DISCUSSES THE OPERATING PRINCIPLES OF KEY LOCKS INCLUDING WARDED, WAFER OR DISC TUMBLER, PIN TUMBLER, AND LEVER LOCKS, AS WELL AS COMBINATION LOCKS. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EACH, AND THE MANNER IN WHICH BURGLARS CAN MANIPULATE OR NEUTRALIZE THEM, IS CLEARLY EXPLAINED. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT WARD LOCKS OFFER VERY LITTLE SECURITY, AND IN GENERAL, WAFER OR DISC TUMBLER LOCKS ARE MORE SECURE. HE ALSO INDICATES THAT THE PIN TUMBLER OFFERS MORE SECURITY THAN THE WARDED LOCK OR THE WAFER TUMBLER LOCK. IN ADDITION, NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN LOCK TECHNOLOGY ARE DISCUSSED AS ARE LOCK PICKING AND OTHER METHODS OF ENTRY. DIAGRAMS ILLUSTRATING BASIC LOCK FUNCTIONINGS ARE INCLUDED. IN CONCLUSION, THE AUTHOR STRESSES THAT 'LOCKS ARE DELAY DEVISES ONLY...AND...MUST BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER SECURITY MEASURES GUARDS, ALARMS, BARRIERS, LIGHTING, ETC., TO CAPITALIZE ON THE DELAY THEY PROVIDE'.
