This article describes the work of the Prison Rehabilitation Industries and Diversified Enterprises (PRIDE) in training inmates for jobs and helping with the transition back into the work force upon release.
Abstract
PRIDE, a nonprofit company, operates in Florida prisons to help reduce recidivism by training inmates for jobs while they are incarcerated and by helping with job placement upon release. Since 1981 PRIDE has worked in cooperation with the Florida Department of Corrections to instill the importance of a strong work ethic and to offer certified job training programs in correctional facilities. It's mission is the rehabilitation of the offender. While in prison, offenders begin on-the-job training at one of the 300 certified training industries operated by PRIDE. Within 90 days of their release date, these inmates attend PRIDE’s pre-release workshop designed to prepare the inmates for release by completing employment referral forms, developing a reintegration plan, and considering housing and transportation issues. Upon release, PRIDE assists the ex-offenders by providing information on shelter and by setting up job interviews. The program reduces recidivism of Florida’s released inmates by providing the job training and support necessary for a smooth transition into the workforce. References
