Length

Annotation
This 1981 edition of 'Management Statistics for U.S. Courts' presents a composite of the most comparable statistics on the workload of U.S. courts of appeals and U.S. district courts.
Abstract
The statistics presented are compiled from reports submitted by the clerks of the U.S. courts to the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The one page devoted to each district and appeals court supplies statistical data on docket conditions for the years ending June 30, 1976, through 1981. District court workload figures are divided by the number of authorized judgeship positions in each court to provide the workload per judgeship. Workload figures in the courts of appeals are shown per panel, since cases in these courts are generally handled by panels of three judges. The per judgeship and per panel figures virtually eliminate the influence of court size and allow comparison between courts of different sizes. The national profile for the courts of appeals is presented, and the national caseload totals and averages for the district courts are also displayed. Detailed explanations are provided on the data contained in the statistical profiles of the courts, and specific judicial workload statistics are explained. (Author summary modified)
