With the objective to maintain the safety of the maritime transportation sector of the United States, this article briefly examines ways to detect and defeat underwater improvised-explosive devices (IEDs).
Detecting and classifying underwater improvised-explosive devises (IEDs) is an increasingly important factor for maintaining the safety of the maritime transportation sector of business. Several initiatives have been undertaken to institutionalize the Nation’s commitment to combating terrorism, specifically in the realm of maritime transportation. The side scan sonar deployed remotely or in a picket boat, can send images of detected explosive devices, hazards, or even mines to the decisionmaker. The side scan sonar offers a high probability of detection and low percentage of false alarms for bottom devices. The picket boat, when deployed, may be used to challenge boats and/or swimmers entering a predetermined buffer about the high value asset or vessel. Employing the side scan sonar in picket boats provides a safer, effective tool in the detection and avoidance of underwater IEDs. In addition to the side scan sonar, CommerceGuard is a global and cost-efficient system that deters theft, smuggling, and international terrorism by integrating electronic Container Security Devices with a global information network, tracking freight containers as they move through port infrastructure. Also, General Electric’s advanced tamper-proof Container Security Device (CSD) combines the best features of less-sophisticated radio tags and electronic seals, thereby preserving the supply chain’s investment.
