STUDY OF AN UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO UTILIZE THE PERCEPTION BY JUVENILES OF THE EFFECTS OF INCARCERATION AS A PREDICTOR OF RECIDIVISM.
Abstract
AT THE TIME OF THEIR RELEASE FROM AN OHIO MAXIMUM SECURITY JUVENILE INSTITUTION, 426 BOYS WERE ADMINISTERED SIX INSTITUTIONAL IMPACT SCALES MEASURING INTERPERSONAL APPROACH, INMATE CODE, INMATE PRESSURE, SELF-LABELING, REJECTION OF THE INSTITUTION, AND REJECTION OF POSITIVE IMPACT. AN ATTEMPT TO RELATE THE RESULTS TO RECIDIVISM WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. THE AUTHORS SUGGEST THAT FURTHER TESTS OF THE SCALES ON INMATES OF THE SAME AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS ARE NECESSARY TO CROSS-VALIDATE THE METHOD.
