AN ANALYSIS OF POLICE AND OTHER CRIME FIGHTERS AS PRESENTED BY COMIC STRIPS, TELEVISION AND FILMS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR STATES THAT OVERSIMPLIFICATION IN THE MEDIA HAS RESULTED IN THE PRESENTATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES AS A COLLECTION OF MAKE-BELIEVE CRIME-FIGHTERS ENGAGED IN A DEADLY GAME AGAINST MAKE-BELIEVE CRIMINALS ON A DISNEYLAND-LIKE BACKDROP. HE SUGGESTS THAT, TO THE EXTENT THE PUBLIC BELIEVES THESE THEMES, THE CHANCES OF MEANINGFULLY MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF CRIME IN A FREE SOCIETY ARE REDUCED, TO THE EXTENT THE POLICE AND OTHER CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL THEMSELVES BELIEVE THESE THEMES, AN OPERATIONAL TRAGEDY EXISTS.
