DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL PROGRAM AT THE VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL FOR BOYS IN ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS.
Abstract
THE BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF THIS FULL - TIME JUVENILE SCHOOL PROGRAM IS THAT MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR IS LEARNED AND CAN BE MODIFIED THROUGH AN EDUCATIVE PROCESS. IN THIS MODEL, EACH STUDENT IS EVALUATED AND ANALYZED FOR MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIORS SO THAT ALTERNATIVE RESPONSES MAY BE SUBSTITUTED. THERE IS NO OVERT ATTEMPT TO RESTRUCTURE VALUES OR ATTITUDES. EACH STUDENT IS, INSTEAD, EXPOSED TO CULTURAL, ACADEMIC AND COUNSELING EXPERIENCES. A TOKEN ECONOMY IS EMPLOYED IN WHICH POSITIVE BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES ARE REINFORCED BY 'GOOD WRITE - UPS' (A PROMISE TO PAY A SPECIFIC AMOUNT OF TOKENS). UNDESIRED BEHAVIOR IS NEGATIVELY REINFORCED BY FINES. POSSESSION OF TOKENS IS IMPORTANT AS IT REPRESENTS BUYING POWER TO THE STUDENT AND ALSO BECAUSE IT IS NECESSARY FOR PROGRESSING THROUGH THE PROGRAM. THE SCHOOL PROGRAM, THE CENTER OF THE ENTIRE PROGRAM, IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR ARE ALSO OUTLINED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
