Abstract
THE VOLUME IS FIRST CONCERNED WITH HOW TO MAKE OUT THE CRIME REPORT -- THE LEGAL IMPORTANCE OF OBTAINING ALL THE FACTS OF THE CASE, WHAT KIND OF INFORMATION TO INCLUDE IN THE REPORT AND WHERE TO OBTAIN IT, AND THE FORM THE REPORT SOULD TAKE. THE CRIME SCENE SEARCH IS EXPLAINED, WITH THE USE OF TECHNICAL TOOLS AND INVESTIGATIVE PERSONNEL IN LOCATING, IDENTIFYING, AND PRESERVING EVIDENCE. SPECIFIC TYPES OF EVIDENCE TO LOOK FOR AT THE SCENE ARE DESCRIBED, ALONG WITH DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AND THE PARTICULAR TECHNIQUES WHICH SHOULD BE USED IN TAKING AND PRESERVING EACH. BODY FLUIDS (SUCH AS BLOOD, URINE, AND SEMEN), TEETH MARKS, FOOTPRINTS, POISONS, TOOL MARKS, DOCUMENTS, AND FIREARMS ARE AMONG THE TYPES OF EVIDENCE DISCUSSED; CHARTS AND SKETCHES ARE PROVIDED FOR SOME. A SECTION DEALING WITH FORENSIC MEDICINE CONCENTRATES ON THE DETERMINATION OF CAUSE OF DEATH AND DETAILS TYPICAL SIGNS INDICATING DEATH BY STABBING, SHOOTING, STARVATION, ELECTROCUTION, AND OTHER CAUSES. OTHER IMPORTANT MEANS OF DISCOVERING THE FACTS OF A CRIMINAL CASE ARE SUSPECT SURVEILLANCE AND THE USE OF INFORMANTS. THE ACTUAL CARRYING OUT OF SURVEILLANCE, TYPICAL DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED, SELECTION OF INFORMANTS, AND PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN DEALING WITH THEM ARE OUTLINED IN A SEPARATE CHAPTER. THE FINAL SECTION IS CONCERNED WITH CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES. IT OUTLINES POSSIBLE SECURITY DEVICES AGAINST BURGLARY, PROTECTION OF CHILDREN FROM SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND PROTECTION AGAINST FRAUD AND PLACES PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE PREVENTION OF FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS.
