Abstract
Data address the total number of offenses, written warnings, fixed penalty notices, court proceedings, disqualifications and endorsements, and automatic cameras. The total number of motoring offenses handled with official police action in 1992 was 7.9 million, a 6-percent decrease from 1991. Offenses dealt with by fixed-penalty notice declined by 11 percent, down from 5.6 million in 1991 to 5.0 million in 1992. Over four-fifths of fixed-penalty notices were issued for obstruction, waiting, and parking offense. The number of court proceedings for motoring offenses increased by 7 percent over 1991, amounting to 2.4 million proceedings in 1992. The increase in the number of court proceedings was greatest for offense for which a fixed- penalty notice could not be given. The number of driving license disqualifications in 1992 was at 149,000, 6 percent fewer than in 1991. The Road Traffic Act 1991 allows the use of automatic camera devices for road traffic law enforcement. Twelve police forces were using automatic cameras by the end of the year. 17 tables
