Abstract
FINDINGS SHOW THAT THERE WERE 14,163 STATE AND LOCAL COURT SYSTEMS OPERATING IN 16,460 COURT LOCATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES IN 1971. OF THIS NUMBER, 203 WERE APPELLATE COURTS, 3,621 WERE COURTS OF GENERAL JURISDICTION, AND 12,636 WERE COURTS OF LIMITED AND SPECIAL JURISDICTION. APPROXIMATELY 87 PERCENT OF ALL APPELLATE COURTS, 95 PERCENT OF ALL COURTS OF GENERAL JURISDICTION, AND 89 PERCENT OF ALL COURTS OF LIMITED AND SPECIAL JURISDICTION EXERCISED SOME CRIMINAL JURISDICTION. INCLUDED IN THIS PAMPHLET ARE DEFINITIONS OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF COURTS, WITH EACH DEFINITION CENTERING ON THE EXTENT AND NATURE OF JURISDICTION EXERCISED. ALSO INCLUDED ARE SEVERAL TABLES WHICH LIST BY STATE AND REGION THE NUMBER OF APPELLATE COURTS AND COURTS OF GENERAL AND LIMITED JURISDICTION. THE TABLES ALSO IDENTIFY THE TYPES OF LEGAL JURISDICTION EXERCISED BY EACH COURT. (SNI ABSTRACT)
