INADEQUACIES OF PRISON CURRICULA, EDUCATIONAL STAFF, AND FACILITIES ARE DISCUSSED, AND CONCEPTUAL EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING MODELS FOR IMPROVED SERVICES ARE PROPOSED.
Abstract
EDUCATORS CONCERNED WITH USING THE CORRECTIONAL EXPERIENCE IN POSITIVE WAYS SHOULD STRUCTURE AN EDUCATIONAL DELIVERY SYSTEM WHICH TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE WIDE RANGE OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES IN OFFENDERS. ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL APPROACHES INCLUDE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF CORRECTIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS, THE USE OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES, THE CONSTRUCTION OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CENTERS, AND EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSTIC AND REFERRAL CENTERS. IN ADDITION, AN EDUCATIONAL VOUCHER SYSTEM IS PROPOSED WHICH WOULD OFFER OFFENDER ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL SERVICES UPON COMPLETION OF SPECIFIED TIME PERIODS AND UPON MEETING SPECIFIED STANDARDS OF CONDUCT.
