This report presents statistics and discussions regarding the caseloads, appeals, and other details of the activities of the Ohio courts during 1997, as well as caseload trends since 1993.
Abstract
A total of 3,127,675 new cases were filed in Ohio's courts in 1997, the most since 1992 and 12,789 more cases than in 1996. The cases included 2,730 new cases in the Supreme Court, 12,488 in the 12 appellate districts, 165,452 in the general division of the common pleas courts, 78,650 in the domestic relations division, 99,302 in the probate division, and 306,539 in the probate division. Court of appeals judges were each responsible for an average of 175 new cases 5 years ago and 189 cases in 1997. General division judges were each responsible for 749 new cases a year 5 years ago and 784 new cases in 1997. Municipal court judges were each responsible for an average of 11,680 new cases 5 years ago and 12,502 new cases in 1997. The municipal and county courts combined for a total of 2,461,258 new cases filed, including 2,218,041 in the municipal courts and 243,217 in the part-time county courts. The total number of cases terminated reached 3,572,510 in 1997; these cases included new cases, reactivated cases, and cases pending from the previous year.
