Abstract
THE AUTHORS VIEW CITIZEN COOPERATION WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AS THE FOUNDATION FOR SUCH CONTROL. WHILE ORIENTED TOWARD THE POLICE SEGMENT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, THIS BOOK IS STRUCTURED SO THAT BOTH THE CITIZEN AND MEMBERS OF ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES CAN VIEW THE INTERACTION OF THE MANY SOCIAL VARIABLES THAT CREATE ORGANIZED CRIME AND ALLOW IT TO EXIST AS A PART OF SOCIETY. THE AUTHORS IDENTIFY THE THREE MAIN STRATEGIES FOR THE CONTROL OF ORGANIZED CRIME AS, THE EDUCATION OF THE COMMUNITY AND THE POLICE, COOPERATION BETWEEN CITIZENS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES THROUGH CIVIC ACTION GROUPS AND CRIME COMMISSIONS, AND TRADITIONAL PUNITIVE ENFORCEMENT METHODS. FOLLOWING THE THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL CONSIDERATIONS, THE MAJOR PORTION OF ORGANIZED CRIME IS DEVOTED TO A DESCRIPTION OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES. GAMBLING, PROSTITUTION, PORNOGRAPHY, ILLICIT DRUGS, WHITE COLLAR AND BUSINESS CRIMES, AND MILITANT GROUPS ARE DISCUSSED FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF ORGANIZED CRIME INVOLVEMENT. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS PROVIDED AND APPENDIXES INCLUDE A CATEGORICAL LIST OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY ENGAGED IN BY ORGANIZED CRIMINALS, THE ORGANIZED CRIME CONTROL ACT OF 1970, AND A LIST OF STANDARD CLASSIFICATION NUMBERS FOR CRIMES RELATED TO ORGANIZED CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.
